2021 Grad Gift

Dear Fellow Students and extended Selwyn House Families,

My name is Michael Feldman, and I am a Prefect and a proud member of the 2021 ÌÒÑÕÃÛÉ«graduating class. To be sure, this scholastic year was not what was expected. Each of us looked forward to celebrating academic and sporting success with our classmates and teammates; graduation trips, ceremonies and parties with dear friends and family. Certainly, we are disappointed – but that does not diminish our pride in Selwyn House, nor our commitment to the school and our broader community. As the graduating class, we believe that we need to firmly establish our legacy and leave a positive stamp on the school that befits our shared experience.

This year, the graduating class has committed to conferring a meaningful graduation gift to the school (more on that below) and establishing our legacy by funding a bursary for future qualified Selwyn House applicants who may not otherwise have the financial means to attend ÌÒÑÕÃÛÉ«. The amount we raise to fund this bursary will depend entirely upon you!
We have commissioned an incredible young Montreal-born artist to produce an original painting for the school as well as 100 limited edition prints that will first be sold to families of the Class of 2021 and then to the general alumni community thereafter. One hundred percent of the proceeds (net only of the artist's commission and the cost of print materials and shipping) will establish

The Class of 2021 Bursary - the first "Class of" Bursary at Selwyn House. This initiative was well-received by Grade 11s at a recent assembly.

On behalf of the Class of 2021, we thank you for your interest and invite you to read all the details below. Please contact me or Sharon Cozens, Director of Advancement, directly, if you have any questions.

Thank you, in advance, for your support,

Michael Feldman
2020-2021 Prefect

ÌÒÑÕÃÛÉ« the Painting and the Artist

THE PAINTING:
The painting will feature the Selwyn House blazer (crest visible) and both the Grade 11 tie and the Old Boys' tie, representing the passage from ÌÒÑÕÃÛÉ«student to member of the ÌÒÑÕÃÛÉ«Old Boys' Association. The original painting will be unveiled and presented to Mr. Downey, our headmaster, at the end of this school year. The art is done in a "hyper-realistic" style (it looks like a photograph but is actually a painting done free-hand).

One hundred (100) limited
edition numbered and signedunframed prints (measuring 24'' x 30") will be produced by the artist and made available for sale, first exclusively to the Class of 2021 graduates, and thereafter to other classes and Old Boys/alumni. We think this is a memorable piece of Selwyn House history.

THE COST:
Prints are $1,000 with a charitable tax receipt in the amount of $600 for the purchaser.

A specific numbered print can be requested for $2,000 (with a charitable tax receipt in the amount of $1,600 for the purchaser). The chosen number may commemorate a special occasion or meaningful date. Important: These are sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

Each numbered and signed print comes packaged in a protective tube. Prints will be delivered during exam week in June. A list of framing shops will be provided at a later date for those interested.

One hundred percent of the proceeds (net only of artist commission and the cost of print materials and shipping) will be allocated to the 2021 Graduating Class Bursary. We therefore strongly encourage gifts in excess of the listed $1,000 or $2,000; indeed all donations are welcome and will be used to ensure accessibility for deserving candidates - who will become future Gryphons. (Note: tax receipts for the full amount of donations above and beyond the payment price will be issued to the donor).

THE ARTIST:

Our featured artist is Erin Rothstein, a Montreal-born artist, currently living and working in Toronto. Her paintings are centred around food and fashion, using a Minimalist aesthetic to enhance the "Pop-Culture" allure of her signature Hyperreal technique. She holds a BFA from Concordia University, where she specialized in painting and drawing. She also holds an MA from The University of Western Ontario, where she studied in detail the evolution of décor in modern art. Her work has received a Scotiabank Viewers Choice Award, as well as support from the Ontario Arts Council. She has also received recognition in The Huffington Post, The National Post, Architectural Digest, and Toronto Life. Rothstein's work is held in major collections including Google and McGill University.

Erin’s genre is described as “hyper-realism” - her paintings are hard to distinguish from photographs. Her attention to detail and signature style have made her a recognized and “up-and-coming” Canadian artist. You can learn more about Erin and see samples of her amazing work .
WHY A BURSARY?
Not unlike the benches outside (a grad gift from a previous class), our grad gift will be something that will endure long after we graduate from Selwyn House. This bursary, our gift to future Gryphons, will be our legacy at Selwyn House. This is our opportunity, as a Band of Brothers, to leave a mark on Selwyn in a positive light, and pave the way for future graduating classes. It is a way to give a deserving student the opportunity to attend Selwyn House. As Old Boys, we will continue to add to this bursary, funding its growth to help even more students.

ESTABLISHING SELWYN'S FIRST-EVER CLASS BURSARY
We are grateful to all those who purchase a print. Proceeds from the sale will fund the newly established Class of 2021 Bursary - a needs-based award. The school currently has a variety of bursaries that are available to qualifying students. These are made possible by generous donors. The Class of 2021 Bursary will be the first Class Bursary of its kind and may inspire other classes to build one of their own.

AWARDING THE CLASS OF 2021 BURSARY
A minimum of $25,000 is required to name a bursary at Selwyn House. This sale of prints should generate $60,000 minimum for our bursary. Once all funds are received, they will be invested in the Veritas Fund for one year before disbursing the first award (approximately 4% per year, or around $2,400). The capital will remain invested so that the fund can continue to grow.

If all funds are received by June 30 of this year, the first bursary can then be awarded for the September 2022-2023 school year.
